He left a tiny but decisive body of work: chiefly the two books Pedro Páramo (1955) and The Burning Plain (1953).
He worked for a tyre company and as a civil servant at Mexico's Instituto Nacional Indigenista.
He was also a significant photographer, leaving an archive of more than 6,000 images of the Mexican landscape.
García Márquez claimed he could recite Pedro Páramo by heart, paragraph by paragraph.
He received the Prince of Asturias Prize for Letters in 1983, three years before his death.
