He was a celebrity of his time, famous for his wit, his extravagant dress and his London salons.
In 1895 he was sentenced to two years of hard labour for 'gross indecency' over his affair with Lord Alfred Douglas.
In prison he wrote the long letter De Profundis and the poem The Ballad of Reading Gaol.
He died penniless in Paris at 46 under the pseudonym Sebastian Melmoth.
His grave at Père-Lachaise in Paris is now protected by a glass screen to stop fans kissing it.
