Argentine writer of the Latin American Boom, author of Hopscotch, Bestiary and Cronopios and Famas.
He was born in Brussels in 1914 while his father was an Argentine diplomat, but grew up in the suburbs of Buenos Aires.
He published Hopscotch in 1963, considered one of the major formal innovations of the twentieth century.
He settled in Paris in 1951 and worked for decades as a translator at UNESCO.
He took French citizenship in 1981 in protest against the Argentine military dictatorship.
He supported the Cuban Revolution and the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, stances that earned him the cold shoulder of the Argentine government.
