He was born in Aracataca, Colombia, the village that inspired Macondo in One Hundred Years of Solitude.
Before his literary breakthrough he worked as a journalist in Cartagena, Bogotá and Paris.
He wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude in 1967 in some 18 months of intense seclusion in Mexico City.
He won the Nobel Prize in 1982 and wore a white liqui-liqui suit at the Stockholm ceremony.
He had a long friendship with Fidel Castro and spent his final years in Mexico City, where he died in 2014.
