He was born in Panama, the son of a Mexican diplomat, and grew up in Washington, Buenos Aires, Quito and Santiago.
He published Where the Air Is Clear in 1958, the founding novel of modern Mexican fiction.
He served as Mexico's ambassador to France in 1975-1977 and resigned in political protest.
He received the Cervantes Prize (1987) and the Prince of Asturias Prize (1994).
He died in Mexico City in 2012 from an ulcer haemorrhage while working on a new novel.
