He directed the National Library of Argentina from 1955 to 1973, a post he held even as he became almost completely blind.
He never won the Nobel Prize in Literature, considered by critics one of the greatest omissions of the twentieth century.
He published his first poetry collection, Fervor de Buenos Aires, in 1923 in a print run of 300 copies.
He co-wrote detective stories with Adolfo Bioy Casares signed as 'H. Bustos Domecq'.
He died in Geneva in 1986, where he wished to be buried, far from official Argentine honours.
