La historia se desarrolla en la Andalucía del siglo XIX y narra las peripecias del corregidor, un funcionario real, que intenta seducir a la bella molinera Frasquita, esposa del tío Lucas. La obra destaca por su humor, su colorido costumbrista y su crítica a la corrupción y el abuso de poder. Esta edición de Crítica, publicada en 1993, cuenta con una edición, prólogo y notas de Eva F. Florensa, y un estudio preliminar de Sergio Beser, ofreciendo una visión completa y enriquecedora de este clásico de la literatura española.

Pedro Antonio de Alarcón
Pedro Antonio de Alarcón y Ariza was a nineteenth-century Spanish novelist, known best for his novel El sombrero de tres picos (1874), an adaptation of popular traditions which provides a description of village life in Alarcón's native region of Andalusia. It was the basis for Hugo Wolf's opera Der Corregidor (1897); for Riccardo Zandonai's opera La farsa amorosa (1933); and Manuel de Falla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (1919).
