He founded the republican newspaper El Pueblo in Valencia in 1894 and served several terms as an MP.
He worked as a First World War correspondent, an experience that inspired The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
He lived in exile in France during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera and died in Menton in 1928.
Several of his novels were adapted in Hollywood, making him internationally wealthy.
His remains were repatriated to Valencia in 1933 with a Republican state funeral.
