She was made Countess of Pardo Bazán by Alfonso XIII in 1908.
She published The Burning Question (1883), the essay that introduced French naturalism into Spain.
She became the first woman to hold a university chair in Spain, at the Universidad Central de Madrid.
She founded the Biblioteca de la Mujer to publish translations of international feminist texts.
She died in Madrid in 1921 having tried three times, unsuccessfully, to enter the Real Academia Española.
