Nineteenth-century Sevillian poet and prose writer, key figure of late Spanish Romanticism, author of Rimas and Leyendas.
He was born in Seville into a family of Flemish painters; the original family name was Domínguez Bastida.
He contributed to numerous newspapers and worked as a censor of novels in Madrid.
His Rimas and Leyendas were published posthumously in 1871, thanks to friends who collected the surviving manuscripts.
He suffered from tuberculosis all his life and died at 34 in Madrid in 1870.
He spent his final years at the Veruela monastery in Zaragoza, where he wrote From My Cell.
