He was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1843 and moved to Madrid in 1862 to study law, a profession he never practised.
He wrote the 46 novels of the Episodios Nacionales, a vast narrative fresco of nineteenth-century Spain.
Fortunata y Jacinta (1886-1887) is considered his masterpiece and one of the peaks of European realism.
He was nominated for the 1912 Nobel Prize in Literature but an intense campaign by Spanish conservatives blocked the award.
He died in Madrid in 1920 almost completely blind and in financial difficulties.
