He was born in Zamora but spent his entire adult life in Oviedo, where he held a chair of Law.
La Regenta appeared in 1884-1885 and was then condemned by the Asturian Church.
He signed most of his literary criticism with the pen name 'Clarín'.
He was a fierce critic of Spanish Restoration society.
He died of tuberculosis in Oviedo in 1901 aged only 49.
