Nineteenth-century Spanish novelist, journalist and critic, author of La Regenta, one of the great realist novels in Spanish.
He was born in Zamora but spent his entire adult life in Oviedo, where he held a chair of Law.
La Regenta appeared in 1884-1885 and was then condemned by the Asturian Church.
He signed most of his literary criticism with the pen name 'Clarín'.
He was a fierce critic of Spanish Restoration society.
He died of tuberculosis in Oviedo in 1901 aged only 49.
