He worked almost his entire career as manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London for the actor Henry Irving.
He spent seven years writing Dracula, which was published on 26 May 1897.
The Count was loosely modelled on Vlad III the Impaler, voivode of Wallachia in the fifteenth century.
He never travelled to Romania; he built his Transylvania from travel books and maps consulted at the British Museum.
He died in London in 1912 in disputed circumstances; some biographies cite complications from syphilis.
