«El sombrero de tres picos» is the costumbrista novel by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, published by Alianza Editorial in paperback (198 pages, in Spanish).
The action takes place in the Andalusian countryside, where the corregidor, the local authority, becomes infatuated with Frasquita, the miller's wife, married to tío Lucas. The entanglements caused by that desire, with comings and goings between the mill and the village, end in a comedy of errors that portrays popular types and language of nineteenth-century Spain.
The work was originally published in 1874; this 1998 edition by Alianza Editorial belongs to the El libro de bolsillo collection, Clásicos section (no. 1107), and includes an introduction by Jorge Campos.
Recommended for literature students and readers who want to approach nineteenth-century Spanish narrative.

Pedro Antonio de Alarcón y Ariza was a nineteenth-century Spanish novelist, known best for his novel El sombrero de tres picos (1874), an adaptation of popular traditions which provides a description of village life in Alarcón's native region of Andalusia. It was the basis for Hugo Wolf's opera Der Corregidor (1897); for Riccardo Zandonai's opera La farsa amorosa (1933); and Manuel de Falla's ballet The Three-Cornered Hat (1919).
