He was born in Fuente Vaqueros, near Granada, into a well-off rural landowning family.
He lived at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid alongside Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel and other figures of the Generation of '27.
He spent nearly a year in New York and Cuba (1929-1930), an experience that inspired Poet in New York.
He directed the university theatre group La Barraca, which toured Spanish classics around villages during the Second Republic.
He was murdered by Francoist repression on 19 August 1936 near Granada; the exact location of his grave is still unknown.
