He was born in Moguer (Huelva), the village that gives Platero and I its main setting.
He married Zenobia Camprubí in New York in 1916; she was a translator and a decisive intellectual companion in his work.
He championed 'pure poetry' and shaped the entire Spanish Generation of '27.
He went into exile in 1936 because of the Spanish Civil War and lived in Cuba, the United States and Puerto Rico until his death.
He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1956, only days before the death of his wife Zenobia.
