He was born in Seville in 1875 and spent his youth in Madrid, closely linked to the Institución Libre de Enseñanza.
He married Leonor Izquierdo in 1909; she died in 1912 at only 18, a loss that marked his work deeply.
He lived and taught in Soria, Baeza and Segovia before settling permanently in Madrid.
He defended the Republic during the Spanish Civil War and died in 1939 in Collioure, France, days after crossing the border with his mother.
His line 'Caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar' is one of the most quoted in Spanish poetry.
