He studied medicine and worked for a few years as a country doctor in Cestona before devoting himself to writing.
In the early twentieth century he ran the family bakery Viena Capellanes in Madrid with his brother Ricardo.
He wrote the 22-volume series Memoirs of a Man of Action, a vast novelised fresco of nineteenth-century Spain.
He was repeatedly nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature but never received it.
He had a strong influence on writers such as Ernest Hemingway, who visited him in Madrid in his last years.
