Spanish writer, philosopher and rector of the University of Salamanca, a key figure of the Generation of '98 and author of Mist, San Manuel Bueno, Martyr and The Tragic Sense of Life.

He served as rector of the University of Salamanca several times between 1900 and his death.
He coined the term 'nivola' for a new narrative form he inaugurated with Mist (1914).
In 1936 he publicly confronted General Millán-Astray with the famous phrase 'you will conquer but not convince'.
He wrote in Spanish, Basque, French and Italian and reflected deeply on Spanish identity.
He died under house arrest in Salamanca on 31 December 1936, during the first months of the Spanish Civil War.
