«San Manuel Bueno, mártir» is the novel by Miguel de Unamuno, published by Anaya Infantil y Juvenil in paperback (208 pages, in Spanish).
The priest don Manuel is admired by his community, who venerate him as a saint. The narrator, Ángela Carballino, reveals the priest's hidden torment: he has lost his faith and pretends to believe to spare those who come to him from desolation. From that intimate conflict, the novel reflects on faith, doubt, appearance and hope.
