He lost an arm in 1899 in a brawl with the journalist Manuel Bueno at the Café de la Montaña in Madrid.
Before turning to literature he travelled to Mexico as a Spanish soldier.
He created the 'esperpento', an aesthetics of distorting mirrors formalised in Luces de Bohemia (1920).
He was artistic director of Madrid's Teatro Español and director of the Spanish Academy in Rome.
His long beard and cape made him an unmistakable figure in bohemian Madrid.
