He shared the Spanish National Prize for Literature in 1925 with Gerardo Diego for Marinero en tierra.
He was a member of the Communist Party of Spain and a deputy for Cádiz in the 1977 Cortes.
He went into exile in Argentina, where he lived from 1940 to 1963, then in Rome until his return to Spain in 1977.
He was also a painter; his 'liricogramas' combine calligraphy, colour and poetry.
He died in 1999 in El Puerto de Santa María at 96, the last surviving member of the Generation of '27.
