He began writing Treasure Island to amuse his stepson Lloyd Osbourne during a Scottish holiday.
He suffered from tuberculosis his whole life and travelled in search of healthy climates through Europe, the United States and the Pacific.
He spent his last years on the island of Upolu in Samoa, where the locals called him Tusitala, the 'teller of tales'.
His Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was written, according to his wife Fanny, in only a few days.
He died at 44 of a cerebral haemorrhage and was buried at the top of Mount Vaea, Samoa.
