«El diablo cojuelo» is the picaresque novel by Luis Vélez de Guevara, published by Orbis in paperback (151 pages, in Spanish).
The story follows Cleofás, a student who frees Asmodeus, a devil trapped in a bottle. In gratitude, the devil carries him through the air over Madrid and shows him, as if lifting the rooftops, what happens inside the houses: love intrigues, miseries and vices of 17th-century society. The work is a social satire with humour and grotesque characters.
The work belongs to the Historia de la Literatura Española collection, number 75. Edition by Agustín Donázar.
For readers interested in Spanish Golden Age literature or classic social satire.

Luis Vélez de Guevara was a Spanish dramatist and novelist. He was born at Écija and was of Jewish converso descent. After graduating as a sizar at the University of Osuna in 1596, he joined the household of Rodrigo de Castro, Cardinal-Archbishop of Seville, and celebrated the marriage of Philip III in a poem signed Vélez de Santander, a name which he continued to use until some years later.
