He kept a famous literary feud with Luis de Góngora, against whom he wrote scathing sonnets.
He studied at the University of Alcalá and served as secretary and political adviser to the Duke of Osuna in Sicily.
He suffered from gout and a congenital limp but was still feared as a swordsman.
He was imprisoned at the monastery of San Marcos in León from 1639 to 1643 on the orders of Olivares.
