His real name was Eric Arthur Blair; he chose the pen name 'George Orwell' from a river in East Anglia.
He fought with the POUM in the Spanish Civil War and was wounded in the neck by a sniper's bullet in Aragon.
He worked as a colonial policeman in Burma, an experience reflected in Shooting an Elephant and Burmese Days.
He wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four on the Scottish island of Jura, ill with tuberculosis, and died a few months after publication.
His name gave English the adjective 'Orwellian', shorthand for dystopian societies and totalitarian surveillance.
