Nineteenth-century English writer, author of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, one of the first works of science fiction and a Gothic horror classic.
She was the daughter of the early feminist Mary Wollstonecraft and the philosopher William Godwin, and the wife of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
She conceived Frankenstein in 1816 at Villa Diodati during the famous gathering with Lord Byron and John Polidori, aged only 18.
Frankenstein appeared anonymously in 1818 and was wrongly attributed to her husband by early reviewers.
She suffered the early deaths of three of her four children, and her husband drowned in 1822 at only 29.
She died of a brain tumour at 53 and was buried in Bournemouth together with the ashes of her husband's heart.
