In a chaotic and apocalyptic world, a middle-aged woman takes on the task of raising a twelve-year-old girl. Through her diary, the protagonist offers us a glimpse into an uncertain future, reflecting on memory, affections, loneliness, and the forms of violence we accept. A visionary novel by Doris Lessing that explores the forces that can save us from total destruction and how to survive a present that can be as horrendous as any future.
