He was born in Portland, Maine, on 21 September 1947.
His first published novel, Carrie, appeared in 1974 and launched his career.
He has also published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman.
In 1999 he was seriously injured after being struck by a van while walking near his home in Maine.
In 2003 he received the National Book Award Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
