He was born in Mondovi in French Algeria into a very poor family and lost his father at the Battle of the Marne when only a few months old.
He edited the underground newspaper Combat during the German occupation of France.
He won the 1957 Nobel Prize in Literature at 44, becoming the second-youngest laureate in its history.
He died in a car accident in 1960; the unfinished manuscript of The First Man was found in the car.
In his youth he was the goalkeeper of Racing Universitaire d'Alger before tuberculosis ended his sporting career.
