«Martín Fierro» is the gauchesque narrative poem by José Hernández, published by Edimat Libros in hardback (256 pages, in Spanish).
The poem, written in octosyllables, follows a gaucho payador who, harassed by authority and forcibly recruited, sees his way of life on the pampa threatened. Hernández recreates the speech and song of the frontier and turns the protagonist into a symbol of gauchesque literature and of the denunciation of social injustice.
The poem originally appeared in 1872 and is part of the «Martín Fierro» series (parts 1 and 2). This 2004 edition belongs to the Clásicos Selección collection and includes an introduction.
A reference title for students and enthusiasts of Hispanic literature and gauchesque poetry.

José Hernández was an Argentine journalist, poet, and politician best known as the author of the epic poem Martín Fierro. In his tribute, his birthday is celebrated in Argentina as a national holiday, called Tradition Day.
