«Martín Fierro» is the epic poem by José Hernández, published by Alianza Editorial in paperback (336 pages, in Spanish).
The poem recreates the life of the gaucho Martín Fierro, forcibly recruited to serve on the frontier, where he suffers injustices that lead him to desert and live outside the law. It brings together «El gaucho Martín Fierro» and «La vuelta de Martín Fierro», and portrays the customs and speech of the nineteenth-century Argentine gaucho.
The two parts were originally published in 1872 and 1879. This edition includes a preliminary study and notes by Santiago M. Lugones and belongs to the El libro de bolsillo - Literatura collection.
Recommended for readers of classical poetry and Latin American literature; it appears frequently in school settings.
José Hernández was an Argentine journalist, poet, and politician best known as the author of the epic poem Martín Fierro. In his tribute, his birthday is celebrated in Argentina as a national holiday, called Tradition Day.
