«La vieja sirena» is the novel by José Luis Sampedro, published by Ediciones Destino in paperback (544 pages, in Spanish).
Set in third-century Alexandria, the novel follows Ahram, a powerful navigator; Krito, an enigmatic philosopher; and Irenia, a sensual woman bought as a slave. First instalment of the trilogy «Los círculos del tiempo». The work was originally published in 1990; this edition appeared in 2004.
A work suitable for readers of historical fiction and contemporary Spanish narrative; it combines history, love and mystery in late Roman Alexandria.
