He began as a copywriter before turning to young-adult fiction with The Prince of Mist (1993).
The Shadow of the Wind (2001) became a worldwide phenomenon: translated into over 50 languages and sold in tens of millions of copies.
He spent his last decades in Los Angeles, where he also worked as a screenwriter.
The Cemetery of Forgotten Books is a fictional library inspired by Barcelona's old Hospital de la Santa Creu.
He died of cancer on 19 June 2020 in Los Angeles at 55.
