La vieja sirena es una novela del escritor español José Luis Sampedro, publicada en 1990. La historia se desarrolla en el Egipto del siglo III, una época de cambios y confusión, donde dos grandes imperios, el romano y el persa, inician una lenta decadencia. La protagonista, envuelta en su belleza y misterio, recorre un itinerario hasta llegar a Alejandría, donde dos hombres marcarán su destino: Ahram el Navegante, hombre de acción sediento de poder, y el filósofo Krito, poseedor del don de la palabra. La novela es un canto a la vida, una recreación histórica y un relato fantástico de inusual lirismo y sensualidad, así como una reflexión humanista sobre el poder y una parábola sobre nuestro inestable presente.

José Luis Sampedro Sáez was a Spanish economist and writer who advocated an economy "more humane, more caring, able to help develop the dignity of peoples". Academician of the Real Academia Española since 1990, he was the recipient of the Order of Arts and Letters of Spain, the Menéndez Pelayo International Prize (2010) and the Spanish Literature National Prize (2011).
