«La Regenta» is the novel by Leopoldo Alas «Clarín», published by Planeta in paperback (887 pages, in Spanish).
The work follows Ana Ozores, a young woman married to a much older man, in the provincial city of Vetusta, a stand-in for Oviedo. Between the attention of Fermín de Pas, canon of the cathedral, and the intrigues of local society, Ana wavers between desire, faith, and appearances, in a critical portrait of nineteenth-century Spanish bourgeoisie.
Work originally published in 1884 and 1885. This edition includes editing and notes by José Luis Gómez, introduction by Sergio Beser, and belongs to the Autores hispánicos collection (no. 166).
For readers interested in classics of Spanish literature and in the realist novel of the nineteenth century.

Leopoldo Enrique García-Alas y Ureña, also known as Clarín, was a Spanish realist novelist and journalist born in Zamora. His inflammatory articles, known as paliques (“chitchat”), as well as his advocacy of liberalism and anti-clericalism, made him a formidable and controversial critical voice. He died in Oviedo.
