«La Regenta» is the realist novel by Leopoldo Alas, «Clarín», published by Alianza Editorial in paperback (700 pages, in Spanish).
Ana Ozores lives trapped in Vetusta, a stand-in for Oviedo, between the routine of marriage and a sanctimonious society. Driven by desire, she clashes with the dominant morality while canon Fermín de Pas and a local Don Juan vie for her. The work criticises the hypocrisy and repressed passions of 19th-century Spain.
Published in 1884 and 1885. This Alianza Editorial edition includes a prologue by Ricardo Gullón and belongs to the El Libro de Bolsillo collection.
Of interest to readers of Spanish classics and literature students, as a reference work of 19th-century realism.

Leopoldo Enrique García-Alas y Ureña, also known as Clarín, was a Spanish realist novelist and journalist born in Zamora. His inflammatory articles, known as paliques (“chitchat”), as well as his advocacy of liberalism and anti-clericalism, made him a formidable and controversial critical voice. He died in Oviedo.
