«Genio y figura» is the novel by Spanish writer Juan Valera, published by Cátedra in paperback (273 pages, in Spanish).
Unlike his earlier novels, Juan Valera moves away from Andalusia and sets the plot in cosmopolitan settings he knew from his diplomatic work. In the manner of the French erotic novel, the work includes daring situations and its publication caused a scandal, although it does not defend free love or contempt for social norms.
Edition by Cyrus DeCoster, with bibliography (pp. 47-55), in the Letras Hispánicas collection.
For those who appreciate classic nineteenth-century Spanish fiction and the novels of Juan Valera.
