«Bartleby, el escribiente» is Herman Melville's short story, published by Ediciones Akal in the Básica de Bolsillo collection, in paperback (128 pages, in Spanish).
In nineteenth-century New York, a lawyer hires a scrivener named Bartleby, whose response to any task is «preferiría no hacerlo». His attitude of passive resistance gradually transforms the office routine and pushes coexistence to an unsettling limit, in a parable about alienation and lack of communication in the modern world.
Short story originally published in the nineteenth century. This edition is number 39 in Akal's Básica de Bolsillo collection, with translation and notes by Eduardo Chamorro.

Herman Melville was an American writer of the American Renaissance period. Among his best-known works are Moby-Dick (1851), Typee (1846), a romanticized account of his experiences in Polynesia, and Billy Budd, Sailor, a posthumously published novella. At the time of his death, Melville was not well known to the public, but 1919, the centennial of his birth, was the starting point of a Melville revival. Moby-Dick would eventually be considered one of the Great American Novels.
