She was a central member of the Bloomsbury Group, the circle of intellectuals and artists named after the London district.

She suffered recurring depressive episodes throughout her life, documented in her diaries.
She published A Room of One's Own in 1929, a pioneering essay on women writers and economic independence.
She took her own life on 28 March 1941 by drowning in the river Ouse with her coat pockets full of stones.
