He served as a sailor on whalers and spent time on Pacific islands, experiences he drew on in Typee and Moby-Dick.
Moby-Dick appeared in 1851 and sold very poorly in his lifetime; full recognition came decades later.
He was a close friend of the writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, to whom he dedicated Moby-Dick.
He spent much of his life as a customs inspector at the port of New York to earn a living.
He died almost forgotten in 1891; his critical rediscovery began around 1920 with the publication of Billy Budd.
