He spent 12 years in exile in Argentina, Peru, Cuba and Spain because of the Uruguayan dictatorship (1973-1985).
His poem Te quiero and Eduardo Mateo's song of the same title are among the best-known of Latin American culture.
He worked as an accountant, journalist and literary editor of the weekly Marcha.
The Mario Benedetti Cultural Centre in Alicante preserves his Spanish legacy.
He died on 17 May 2009 in Montevideo, where he was given a state funeral.
