Open Veins of Latin America (1971) was censored by the Uruguayan, Chilean and Argentine dictatorships in the 1970s.
He lived in exile in Argentina and Spain after the 1973 Uruguayan coup.
Before his exile he edited the magazines Marcha and Crisis.
