Uruguayan journalist and writer, author of Open Veins of Latin America and the Memory of Fire trilogy.

Open Veins of Latin America (1971) was censored by the Uruguayan, Chilean and Argentine dictatorships in the 1970s.

He lived in exile in Argentina and Spain after the 1973 Uruguayan coup.

Before his exile he edited the magazines Marcha and Crisis.

Hugo Chávez gave Barack Obama a copy of Open Veins in 2009, which triggered a surge in US sales.

He won the Stig Dagerman Prize (2010) and the Premio Casa de las Américas several times.
