Pramoedya Ananta Toer was born in Blora, Java, during the era of the Dutch East Indies.
During the Japanese occupation, he worked as a typist for a newspaper in Jakarta.
He wrote his first major novel, The Fugitive, while imprisoned by Dutch forces.
His most internationally acclaimed work is the Buru Quartet, which explores Indonesian history.
Throughout his prolific career, he published a total of 139 works spanning novels, essays, and historical fiction.
