«Une ardente patience» is the novel by Antonio Skármeta, published by Seuil in paperback (160 pages, in French).
On the Chilean coast of Isla Negra, the postman Mario Jiménez has a single client: the poet Pablo Neruda. To win over Beatriz, the daughter of the innkeeper, Mario asks Neruda to teach him to handle words and metaphor. From that relationship is born a friendship that Pinochet's military coup will put to the test.
The novel was originally published as «Ardiente paciencia» (1985), translated into French by François Maspero; it inspired the film «Il postino», with Massimo Troisi and Philippe Noiret.
