He was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, on 8 February 1955.
Before becoming a novelist he worked as a criminal defence lawyer in Mississippi.
His first novel, A Time to Kill, took three years to write and sold very few copies when first published in 1989.
Mass success arrived in 1991 with The Firm, which reached number one on the New York Times bestseller list.
Several of his novels have been adapted into films starring Tom Cruise, Matt Damon and Julia Roberts.
