Paris, on the eve of the German invasion: thousands of families flee along congested roads under bombardment. Then, in an occupied village, the inhabitants coexist with the soldiers in a climate of fear, collaboration and clandestine love affairs. Written during the war itself by someone who did not live to finish it, the novel portrays French society of the era with irony and lucidity.
Conceived in five parts, of which the author only managed to write two, the work won the Prix Renaudot in 2004. This Spanish edition includes the translation by José Antonio Soriano Marco.

Irène Némirovsky was a novelist of Ukrainian Jewish origin who was born in Kiev, then in the Russian Empire. She lived more than half her life in France and wrote in French, but was denied French nationality. Arrested as a Jew under the racial laws – which did not take into account her conversion to Roman Catholicism – she died in Auschwitz at the age of 39. Némirovsky is best known for the posthumously published Suite française.
