He was born in Paris on 19 April 1951.
He spent many years as an adult-education trainer in literature and general culture before publishing his first novel.
His debut, Travail soigné (Irène), appeared in 2006 and introduced Commandant Camille Verhœven.
In 2013 he won the Prix Goncourt for The Great Swindle, a novel about two First World War survivors.
He himself wrote the screenplay for the 2017 film adaptation See You Up There, directed by Albert Dupontel.
