«Romanticismo» is the contemporary fiction novel by Manuel Longares, published by Alfaguara in paperback (496 pages, in Spanish).
The novel follows the Arce-Matesanz family, conservative and well-to-do, from Madrid's Salamanca district, from Franco's death to the right's victory in 1996. Its members, lifelong Francoists, watch with bewilderment the Transition and the subsequent socialist triumph as their world of conventions crumbles in the neighbourhood's shops, bars and cafés.
It belongs to Alfaguara's Hispánica collection and won the Premio de la Crítica de Narrativa Castellana in 2001.
Recommended for readers of contemporary Spanish fiction and for those who want to approach the Spain of the Transition through fiction.
