He lived in Chile until age 15, then in Mexico, where he co-founded the 'infrarrealismo' movement with Mario Santiago.
He settled in Blanes (Girona) in 1985 and lived there until his death.
He won the Rómulo Gallegos Prize with The Savage Detectives in 1999.
His posthumous novel 2666 (2004) was published in five parts, per his instructions to his heirs.
He died in 2003 while waiting for a liver transplant.
